What is ChromaIQ?

ChromaIQ is a free online color perception test that measures how accurately you see and distinguish colors. The game consists of 5 rounds with 20 total challenges that take approximately 90 seconds to complete. Each round tests a different aspect of color vision: spotting subtle differences, identifying HEX codes by sight, sorting colors by hue, filling gradient gaps, and recalling color sequences from memory.

Unlike clinical color blindness tests, ChromaIQ is designed as an engaging game that produces a shareable score card. Your results include a Wordle-style emoji breakdown that you can post on social media to challenge friends. The entire game runs in your browser with zero data sent to any server.

Whether you are a designer testing your eye for color, a developer curious about your perception abilities, or someone who simply enjoys visual puzzles, ChromaIQ provides a quick and entertaining way to benchmark your color vision.

How ChromaIQ Scores Work

Each of the 20 challenges awards 0 to 5 points based on accuracy and speed, for a maximum total of 100 points. The five rounds have different point allocations: Odd One Out (30 points across 6 challenges), Color Match (20 points across 4 challenges), Spectrum Sort (15 points across 3 challenges), Gradient Gap (20 points across 4 challenges), and Color Memory (15 points across 3 challenges).

Your final score determines your rating: Color Curious (0-40), Sharp Eye (41-60), Color Pro (61-80), Chromatic Genius (81-95), or Tetrachromat (96-100). The difficulty increases within each round, with later challenges featuring smaller color differences, larger grids, and longer sequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does my ChromaIQ score mean?

Scores range from 0 to 100. A score of 0-40 means Color Curious, 41-60 is Sharp Eye, 61-80 is Color Pro, 81-95 is Chromatic Genius, and 96-100 earns the rare Tetrachromat rating. Most players score between 50 and 75 on their first attempt.

Is ChromaIQ a color blindness test?

No. ChromaIQ is a perception game, not a medical diagnostic. It tests color discrimination ability across various challenge types. For clinical color vision testing, consult an eye care professional who can administer Ishihara or Farnsworth-Munsell tests.

How does Daily Challenge mode work?

Daily Challenge uses a deterministic seed based on today's date, so every player worldwide gets the exact same 20 puzzles. This makes scores directly comparable. New puzzles unlock at midnight UTC each day.

Can I improve my color perception?

With regular practice, most people improve their color discrimination scores. Screen calibration, ambient lighting, and display quality also affect results. Try playing ChromaIQ daily and you will likely notice improvement within a week.

What is a tetrachromat?

A tetrachromat has four types of cone cells in the retina instead of three, potentially perceiving up to 100 million colors. Roughly 12% of women carry the gene for it, but functional tetrachromacy is extremely rare. Scoring 96+ on ChromaIQ suggests exceptional color perception.
